Bradley Betterton has been appointed as the first athletic director for Wilson’s Mills High School, which is set to open in Fall 2026. Betterton previously served as the athletic director and coach at Archer Lodge Middle School for over 15 years.

In 2024, he received the inaugural Middle School Athletic Director of Excellence Award from the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association, recognizing his significant contributions to middle school athletics administration in the state.

Matt Johnson, principal of Archer Lodge Middle, said, “I’m so excited to see Mr. Betterton become the first athletic director of Wilson’s Mills High. He is a servant leader with a heart for kids and a passion for athletics. His years of experience as an athletic director and coach will ensure that the Green Waves build a culture of fairness and excellence on and off the field.”

Betterton’s career with Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) includes roles at several schools near Wilson’s Mills. He spent four years teaching and coaching at Corinth Holders School when it was a K-8 institution, worked one year as assistant principal at Glendale-Kenly Elementary, and held positions as athletic director and coach at Smithfield Middle.

He is known for his leadership skills, integrity, and dedication to student-athletes. Betterton emphasizes character development, accountability, and excellence in athletics as part of education. His approach aims to establish traditions and standards that will influence student-athletes well into the future.

As Wilson’s Mills High prepares its opening, Betterton will be responsible for creating and guiding its athletic programs. With more than two decades of experience in developing school-based sports programs and fostering positive school environments, he is expected to play a key role during this foundational period.

JCPS District Athletic Director Josh Plisko commented: “Bradley’s leadership skills, focus on scholastic-based athletics, community knowledge, and work ethic make him a great fit for all of the future Green Waves students. JCPS athletics is excited to prepare for this upcoming school year alongside principal Chad Jewett and athletic director Betterton.”
