Of the 12,400 citizens living in Smithfield in 2019, 9,722 were old enough to vote as of Jan. 26, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

The bureau reported 5,284 of those people were female and 4,438 were male.

Data for this story was compiled from the bureau’s American Community Survey. Information from the survey helps to determine how federal and state funds are distributed.
