As Daylight Saving Time begins, the Clayton Fire Department is urging residents to use the occasion as a reminder for home fire safety. On Sunday, March 8, clocks will move forward by one hour at 2 a.m., marking the start of longer daylight hours in the evenings.

The department recommends that when setting clocks ahead, homeowners should also test all smoke alarms in their residences. They advise replacing batteries if necessary and ensuring that all alarms are less than ten years old. Families are also encouraged to review their home fire escape plans together.

“Working smoke alarms play an important role in keeping families safe,” the department stated. “According to the National Fire Protection Association, homes with working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire by about half.” The association further suggests installing smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on each level of a house. This early warning system provides critical time for everyone to evacuate safely.
