On June 24 , U.S. Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade:

“One year ago today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, an unprecedented and dangerous decision for women in North Carolina and throughout the country.

“Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, we’ve seen a push in Congress to ban abortion, and state legislatures across the country are enacting extreme restrictions on abortion access and working to criminalize women’s health care decisions.

In North Carolina, a 12-week abortion ban is set to go into place in just days. This ban goes against the mainstream opinion of North Carolinians, who believe that women should be able to make their own health care decisions free from political interference.

We shouldn’t put a politician between a woman and her doctor. And let’s be clear; The people of North Carolina’s 13th District sent me to Congress to fight for their personal rights and freedoms, not to strip them away.

And make no mistake; I’ll stand up and speak out against efforts to restrict access to abortion and reproductive health care.

That’s why this week, I joined my fellow members of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus to demand that the House Majority bring the Women’s Health Protection Act to the floor of the House for a vote.

I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act. That’s legislation that would put the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law and restore the national right to reproductive health care.

As your Congressman, I’ll continue to stand up for mainstream North Carolina values, fight for reproductive freedom, and work with every ounce of my energy to put the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law.”
