COUNTY OF JOHNSTON: Annual Celebration of Geographic Information Systems Technology

0Comments

County of Johnston issued the following announcement on Nov. 20.

The annual celebration of geographic information systems technology, known as “GIS Day,” was held at Johnston County’s GIS Office yesterday afternoon. A geographic information system is a computer program that can be used to collect, store, check and show information about places on Earth’s surface.

Details about the landscape of the County can be studied, such as where water features, plant communities, and types of soil are. By making connections between seemingly unrelated data, GIS helps us understand patterns and relationships in geography.

In an effort to map the respective data layers relevant to each department, Johnston County GIS serves as a hub for many County agencies, including but not limited to Tax, Emergency Management, 911, Airport, and Public Utilities, as well as the US Census Bureau. They also serve many departments and municipalities with projects for planning purposes and future growth.

The main goal of Johnston County GIS is to set up state-of-the-art systems that can analyze huge amounts of data and give relevant information in a way that makes the work of County agencies more productive. Because of their effort, we save a lot of time and money. To learn more about the GIS department, head over to our website at www.johnstonnc.com/gis.
