Corinth-Holders Elementary School’s Melissa Waring has been honored as the Johnston County Public Schools 2025 Media Specialist Employee of the Year. Waring’s innovative approach has significantly contributed to the success of the media center at CHES, including an initiative allowing students open circulation time each morning before classes begin. This initiative has proven successful, with 40 to 50 students visiting daily.
Students visit not only for books but also for personal interactions like hugs and high-fives. “We don’t just have them in kindergarten or first grade, we have them for all six years, so we get to know these children,” said Waring.
Waring collaborates with STEM, art, and music teachers, as well as the school counselor whose office is located in the media center. They work together to support students facing challenges. “Our team is amazing. I love them so much!” she remarked.
Upon receiving her award, Waring expressed humility and excitement about highlighting the activities available at CHES’s media center. “Then I got excited! We do a lot of cool stuff at CHES,” she noted.
Waring began her journey as a media specialist in 2017 after moving from Philadelphia to Johnston County with her family. She started volunteering at CHES and was mentored by Vanessa Batts, who was then the school’s media specialist. Her volunteer efforts earned her the 2019 CHES Volunteer of the Year Award.
Recognizing her calling in making a difference in children’s lives, Waring pursued substitute teaching credentials and later earned a Master of Library Science degree to become a media specialist following Ms. Batts’ transfer to another school.
Waring’s dedication has transformed the media center into more than just a place filled with books; it is now a welcoming space where students receive positivity and encouragement. The Media Specialist Employee of the Year Award reinforces Waring’s impact and motivates her to continue fostering a love for reading among CHES students while building lasting connections.
