COUNTY OF JOHNSTON: Notification of Discharge of Untreated Wastewater - August 16, 2022

County of Johnston issued the following announcement on Aug. 16.

General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media:

The Johnston County wastewater collection system had a discharge of untreated wastewater on August 16, 2022 of an estimated 35,000 gallons in the vicinity of 2731 US Hwy. 70, Smithfield, N.C.

The untreated wastewater discharged into Reedy Branch in the Neuse River Basin.

The discharge was a result of a pipeline material failure.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on August 16, 2022 and is reviewing the matter.
