Town of Benson issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.

The Town of Benson and the Benson Museum of Local History are excited to announce this year’s Black History Month honoree is the late Cicero Williams — a firefighter, local volunteer, family man, and wonderful example of someone who was truly dedicated to their community.

Mr. Williams passed away in 2006, but looking over his nomination form it is easy to see the immense impact he had on his community over the course of his 70 years in Benson. Many residents know him from his lengthy career as a Benson firefighter beginning in 1975 and ending in 2004. He was the town’s first African-American firefighter.

“He dedicated his life to the fire department,” reads his nomination. “He was always willing to lend a hand when needed.”

In addition to his days in the BFD, Mr. Williams worked at Medlin & Dorman hardware and was a dedicated family man. He and his wife Cora raised eight children. He attended St. James Disciples Church and later attended Smith Chapel.

“He had the heart to serve others and believed in treating everyone right. He would often help the elderly by cutting their grass or helping with any other landscaping needs,” notes his nomination.

For these reasons and many more, Mr. Williams is our 2022 Black History Month honoree.

“We’re excited to celebrate the life of Cicero Williams,” said Benson Cultural Arts Director Derrick Barefoot. “We have a mini documentary planned as well as an in-person celebration this year — we can’t wait to share the stories and memories that Mr. Williams helped to create for Benson and its residents.”

The Benson Museum of Local History’s 11th Annual Black History Month Celebration honoring the life and community service of Mr. Cicero Williams will be held on February 27, 2022 at 2pm at The Barn at Broadlslab (4676 NC 50 South, Benson, NC 27504). The event is free and open to the public.
