Town of Benson issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.
Beginning February 28 and ending April 4, the Town of Benson’s potable water supply sources – the City of Dunn and Johnston County West will be changing their water disinfectant from chloramines (chlorine and ammonia) to chlorine only. This change will impact all customers who pay water bills to the Town of Benson.
The change of water disinfectant is an annual occurrence, and is recommended by the NC Department of Environmental Quality to promote optimal water disinfection throughout the water distribution system.
The town will be flushing hydrants during this time to help distribute the chlorine disinfectant throughout the water distribution system. Hydrant flushing may cause temporary water discoloration, pressure fluctuations or the smell of chlorine which should dissipate within a brief time.
The water will continuously remain safe for consumption during this period. Chloramine disinfection (chlorine and ammonia) will resume on April 5.
This process is not toxic to animals – it’s the same disinfectant that is used in several other water systems. However, higher chlorine content could be toxic to tropical fish, so any tropical fish owners should take note of that during the aforementioned timeframe.
