The Johnston County Public Schools received federal funding to help efforts to improve school safety.
The county-wide district was awarded $100,000 from the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services School Violence Prevention Program in September, the district said in a release. The funding will support plans to make the school district's lockdown protocols more efficient.
"This grant helps support our goal of providing an environment for students and staff that is safe, secure, and conducive to teaching and learning." Auxiliary Officer Chase Ferrell, who along with the director of Research and Grant Development, Cherry Johnson, applied for the grant, said in the release. "We want to ensure school safety stays at the forefront of our minds and that we are always actively working towards finding avenues to allow us to improve in this area."
The Department of Justice's COPS office and the School Violence Prevention Program awarded approximately $50 million this year for school districts across the nation.
"School safety is a top priority for our school system, and these funds will further enhance our efforts," district Superintendent Eric Bracy said in the release.
