Openhousee

Town of Smithfield issued the following announcement on Aug. 6.

The Town of Smithfield Pedestrian Plan Open House will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 2:30 -3:30 p.m. at Smithfield Town Hall.  It is your opportunity to learn about the current pedestrian plan, meet committee members and offer input as we look to improve mobility through the town's pedestrian networks.

The vision is that the Town of Smithfield will be a place where people of all ages and diverse backgrounds have access to pedestrian facilities and programs that promote the following: alternative transportation modes, exercise and wellbeing, safety, connectivity, and celebration and discovery of the town’s rich culture and history.

The goals of the Pedestrian Plan and the steering committee are to:

  • Connect community destinations with parks and natural resources.
  • Create walking opportunities that integrate and link land use, development, and transportation infrastructure.
  • Provide policies that help increase Smithfield’s resilience to potential future risks including storm events or other threats.
  • Provide pedestrian education.
  • Promote environmental, public health, and safety benefits of walking.
  • Encourage policies and zoning guidelines that promote walking.
  • Establish a hierarchy for projects and support services.
