The Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) celebrated the induction of the 16th class into its Athletic Hall of Fame on April 5, 2025, at Smithfield-Selma High. The event honored four individuals for their contributions to education-based athletics and their communities.
Josh Plisko, Director of Athletics and Driver Education, said, "This year, we are celebrating four individuals who each had a profound impact on their communities at-large, and the overall experience of student-athletes involved in education-based athletics."
Nathan Alford Jr., known for his dedication to education and athletics in the Benson area, was one of the honorees. Described by faculty as a man of "respect and caring," Alford was also recognized for his community involvement.
The late Coach John Jacobs, remembered for his influence as a teacher and coach, was another inductee. Despite battling cancer, Jacobs continued coaching and teaching until he passed away in 2017.
Samuel Richard “Rooster” Narron, acknowledged for his connection to baseball and his work with Sportsman’s World, also received the honor. Narron played a role in establishing the Sam Narron Award, which supports Johnston County High School baseball players.
Johnnie Stott, a former coach and community figure in Johnston County, was posthumously inducted. His legacy lives on through Purpose Driven Baseball, an initiative started by his sons in his honor.
A permanent display of all inductees, established on October 27, 2014, can be viewed at the Evander S. Simpson Building. Future nominations can be made through athletic directors at local high schools.
