Johnston County Public Schools marked a significant milestone with the completion of the structural framework for Wilson’s Mills High during a topping-out ceremony held on April 9, 2025. The event, organized by Barnhill Contracting Company, gathered alumni of the original Wilson’s Mills High, community members, local government officials, board of education members, and JCPS leadership.
Superintendent Dr. Eric C. Bracy expressed his enthusiasm about the new high school, stating, “We are thrilled to open Wilson’s Mills High in the fall of 2026 as the 50th school in Johnston County Public Schools.” He emphasized the importance of education in the community's history and future.
The 278,000 square foot facility will support modern learning and host 2,000 students from grades 9 to 12. It features a three-story academic wing and a two-story arts and athletics wing, centrally located at 517 Talton Farm Road, Wilson’s Mills.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Pearce highlighted the school's opening by noting, “In less than 479 days, students and staff will kick off Fall sport tryouts and begin preparing the Wilson’s Mills High School campus for the 2026 school year.”
The new Wilson’s Mills High aims to address capacity challenges in the rapidly growing central Johnston County area, retaining its mascot, the Green Waves. Security is a priority, with a detailed design featuring multiple access control points and clear visibility. The facility includes 11 science labs, a 600-seat auditorium, an auxiliary gymnasium, and specialized learning areas.
Dr. Bracy reinforced the school district’s dedication to quality education, saying, “The new campus represents our continued commitment to meeting the needs of our growing community. It will open doors to meaningful educational opportunities and help ensure every student in the area has access to a high-quality learning experience."
Wilson’s Mills Mayor Fleta Byrd commented on the event's significance: “I think this event is wonderful! This makes it real. We’ve talked about it and worked with the county and school board for so long, and now it’s actually here and it’s beautiful.”
