Firechief

Town Of Smithfield issued the following announcement on Aug. 14.

After an extensive search, we have narrowed our candidates for Smithfield’s next fire chief down to two individuals. Our finalists are Mike Morton, Assistant Fire Marshall for the city of Winston-Salem and Michael Brown, Deputy Fire Chief for the city of Wilson.

Mike Morton currently serves as the Assistant Fire Marshal for the City of Winston-Salem, with previous experience as the Fire Chief for the Town of Elkin, N.C., a Recruit Academy Chief for LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute, and a Senior Responder for the Avery County Rescue Squad. In this role, he oversees fire and explosion investigations, provides guidance on fire code enforcement, and represents the city on the Forsyth County Incident Management Team. Assistant Fire Marshal Morton has worked in the emergency service field for 20 years on behalf of departments in North Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee, and as a Firefighter/Lieutenant in Iraq. Recently recognized by the Center for Public Safety Excellence as a CFAI peer assessor, he is a trusted source of guidance and feedback for the accreditation process of fire departments worldwide.

Michael Brown currently serves as the Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Wilson Fire Department, after previously moving up through the ranks from Firefighter to Battalion Chief. In this role, he assists with the management of all department operations, training, and logistics, and is directly responsible for budgeting, accreditation, strategic planning, and engagement with internal and external stakeholders on behalf of the department. With over 35 years of municipal and volunteer fire service, Deputy Chief Brown has broad experience and a proven track record in assisting his department plan for emerging changes in the profession. He received a Chief Fire Officer Designation in 2020, his Masters in Fire Service Leadership in 2010, and is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program.

Both candidates will participate in a meet and greet TONIGHT (Thursday August 12th) from 6:30-8:30pm at Town Hall. It’s your opportunity to meet with the candidates and ask any questions you may have.

Following the meeting, any input from citizens can be made by calling 919-989-1077 or by emailing the Town Manager at michael.scott@smithfield-nc.com
