County of Johnston issued the following announcement on Feb. 1.
There are two events planned this month and a multitude of resources for anyone and everyone interested in Black history in Johnston County.
Come out to the Heritage Center on Saturday, February 18 for a genealogy workshop for beginners hosted by Desi Campbell. You can register in advance on the facebook event page here:

On Thursday, February 23 the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will host "Overcoming the Odds" an event by the Johnston County Black History Committee. From Inmate to Mayor, Franklin Deese of Marshville will share his inspiring story.
The Heritage Center is open all month for those interested in learning more! The public can also learn more about the history of Johnston County with the recent opening of the new Johnston County History Museum!
The Johnston County Heritage Center is located at the corner of Market and Third street in Town Of Smithfield, NC Government and is still your local special library for genealogy and history research. The Johnston County Museum is an exhibition space on the same block as the Public Library and Ava Gardner Museum off Market street.
