County of Johnston issued the following announcement on March 20.

After years of success on the basketball court and as business leader and county executive in Kent County, Michigan, Johnston County native Wayman Britt is set to hold a community conversation about his newly released book, Fulfilling the Dream: My Path to Leadership and Finding Purpose Through Serving Others at the Johnston County Museum at 10:00 a.m. on April 15, 2023.

The event will be hosted by the Johnston County Heritage Commission and moderated by Smithfield Town Councilman Marlon Lee. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and can be signed by the author.

Wayman will share his journey from growing up poor as a sharecropper’s son in North Carolina and the hard work, determination, and faith that propelled him to be successful as a business and community leader. His memoir documents a life and career journey beginning with his childhood and adolescent years at Short Journey School and Cleveland High School. Fulfilling the Dream chronicles his early adult life in Flint, Michigan, where he led his Flint Northern High School basketball team to two state championships and undefeated season before captaining the University of Michigan team to an NCAA basketball championship run in 1976 and being drafted by the NBA Los Angeles Lakers and the NFL’s Washington Redskins. Wayman’s remarkable story details a journey of self-discovery and a realization of his purpose in serving others. His story proves that nice guys not only don’t have to finish last, but they can finish first.

After graduating from the University of Michigan and his stint in the NBA, Britt held several management positions at the world’s largest office furniture manufacturer, Steelcase, Inc., and Michigan National Bank for nearly three decades. He then transitioned into public service in 2004 as Kent County’s assistant administrator before being appointed as Administrator/Controller in 2017. Britt retired from his role with Kent County in July of 2021 and is now focused on helping young people be successful through the Fulfilling the Dream Celebrity Open. He is founder and president of Wayman Britt Enterprises, which is dedicated to growing leaders.

The Johnston County Museum is located at 329 E. Market Street in Smithfield. For more information, call 919-938-5912.
