Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) and Johnston Community College (JCC) have joined forces to offer students a pathway to earn the Elementary Education Residency Licensure Certificate. This collaboration was formalized on November 14, 2024, when JCPS Chief of Human Resources Linda Edmundson and JCC Vice President of Curriculum Instruction Dr. Marc David signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

The program's curriculum is designed to equip students with the pedagogical skills necessary for certification by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. "We are extremely happy to offer this unique program and to provide future educators with another avenue to develop their skills," stated Linda Edmundson.

Participants will engage in courses such as Educator Preparation Practicum, Effective Instructional Environments, Integrated Curriculum and Instructional Strategies in various subjects, Literacy Development and Instruction, and Technology, Data, and Assessment. To obtain licensure, students must also complete pre-service training, pass state assessments, and meet criteria outlined in the North Carolina Teacher Evaluation System.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts by JCPS and JCC to enhance educational opportunities through their partnership. "This is a great opportunity for students to pursue a certificate in elementary education,” remarked Dr. Marc David. “Our education department worked diligently with JCPS to make this happen and we thank them."

For more information about the program, interested individuals can visit the JCC website.
