Rep. Donna McDowell White (R-Clayton) is echoing the American Red Cross' plea for blood donors. Thousands of blood drives were canceled in the last month because of COVID-19 concerns.
"We lost hundreds of units and the reasons individuals needed blood did not stop because of COVID-19," WNC American Red Cross executive director Megan Robinson told WLOS in early April.
General guidelines for giving blood are that being in good general health and feeling well. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, 16 years with parental consent in some states. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and not have given blood in the last 56 days.
"Leaders at the American Red Cross said there is a desperate need for blood donations," White posted, linking to the article in WLOS.
According to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. is in need of blood every 2 minutes. Blood donations help patients of all ages, from accident survivors to burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients and those battling cancer.
