Town of Smithfield issued the following announcement on July 23.
On July 29, Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order No. 142 will expire and normal utility billing will resume.
First issued on March 31, the governor’s executive orders temporarily suspended residential utility service disconnections and waived penalties, fees, and interest on amounts due during the period. Payments due before March 31 will be subject to disconnection when the order expires. Governor Cooper has emphasized that customers’ bills are not being forgiven under his executive orders. Customers are still responsible for paying for all usage between March 31 and July 29.
We are encouraging customers with balances that have accrued since March 31 to establish a payment plan to avoid any interruptions in Town of Smithfield services. Under the executive order, customers will have a six-month period beginning July 30 to pay off unpaid balances that came due March 31-July 29.
For those customers needing to establish payment plans, contact our offices at 919-934-2116, ext. 1106 or by emailing Finance Director Greg Siler at greg.siler@smithfield-nc.com.
We understand the many difficulties the COVID-19 pandemic has brought and we are ready to assist you during this time.
