Sen. Jim Burgin (R-Johnston) is dissatisfied with Gov. Roy Cooper’s COVID-19 plans for the upcoming school year including requiring K-12 students to wear face coverings.
“How long could your student last wearing a mask,” the Republican senator said in his July 20 newsletter. “Could they go the six hours of classroom instruction?”
While the option for in-person instruction with safety precautions is classified as Plan B, Burgin also expressed issues with giving districts the option of implementing fully remote instruction, which is considered Plan C.
“It is time for students to return to the classroom,” Burgin said in his online newsletter. “I am concerned about those students left alone while their parents go to work. Or those parents who must miss work to stay home with their students.”
Burgin also pointed out that many students rely on schools for more than just education. This includes daily meals and mental health assistance.
