Johnston County plans to expand its EMS services at the expense of two longtime Johnston County EMS providers.

The county Board of Commissioners voted against renewing the current contract, which expires on June 30, 2021. The provider that serves the McGee's Crossroads area, 50-210 EMS, will also cease operation, WNCN reported on Sept. 30.

Four Oaks served the community for 50 years.

Johnston County EMS expects to hire many of the two EMS services' workers, County Manager Rick Hester said, WNCN reported. Response times won't be impacted, he said.

"For the last 10 or 12 years, Johnston has been working in partnership with many of our contracted EMS agencies to transition to one system," Hester said, WNCN reported.

April Barbour Matthews has been a Four Oaks EMS member for 31 years.

"It's about a small-town emergency medical services providing community support, and there's a level we provide that at, that can't be done in a bigger fashion," Barbour Matthews said, WNCN reported.

"It hurts, it hurts real deep," Lisa Langston, the assistant chief at Four Oaks EMS, said, WNCN reported.
