Town of Smithfield issued the following announcement on May 19.
As part of a grant program sponsored by the NC Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Smithfield Fire Department is offering a limited supply of free smoke alarms to homeowners. Fire personnel will observe “Smoke Alarm Saturday” on June 4th checking smoke alarms and installing new smoke alarms in residences throughout Smithfield.
Smoke Alarm Saturday is a one-day, statewide canvassing event to bring awareness of the need to have working smoke alarms in homes. Held on the first Saturday in June, fire departments across North Carolina come together to help educate their communities on how to be as safe as possible in a home fire.
Homeowners whose smoke alarms are not functioning, are past their life span, or who have no alarms in their homes, are encouraged to contact the Smithfield Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office at (919) 934-2468 to schedule a visit during Smoke Alarm Saturday.
