Town of Benson issued the following announcement on Feb. 18.

On Saturday, February 18, the visitation for Firefighter Chris Byrd will take place at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson from 5pm to 9pm.

He was a Senior Firefighter with the Raleigh Fire Department for 26 years and also served in many capacities on the Elevation Fire Department. In addition, Chris was a Logistics Officer with Johnston County Emergency Services.

It is expected that a large crowd will result in on-street parking on West Main Street for several hours, reducing the space available for vehicle traffic to flow and increasing the number of pedestrians in the area.

On Sunday, February 19, the funeral service will take place at the American Legion Building in Benson at 2pm. The northbound lanes of Highway 301/North Wall Street will be blocked to allow parking for fire trucks and other emergency vehicles from other cities and counties beginning at approximately 1pm and vehicle traffic will be alternated through the southbound lanes.

All traffic will then be stopped at approximately 2:45pm, to allow for the procession to move across the street into Roselawn Cemetery. It is expected that Highway 301 will fully reopen by 4pm.

Officers will be on hand to assist with traffic control both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon and motorists are encouraged to decrease their speed, be alert for pedestrians, and to pay attention to the instructions and directions given by the officers.
