Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) Early College Academy senior Charlene Esteban Vazquez has been nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, a prestigious honor recognizing high school students across the nation. Only 40 students from North Carolina received this nomination, which considers academic achievements, personal characteristics, leadership abilities, and service activities.
Esteban Vazquez shared her thoughts on the nomination and discussed her academic journey and future plans.
"I was thrilled when I received the invitation to apply for the program," she said. "I’ve put a lot of effort into my school and extracurricular activities, and it’s such an honor to be recognized."
As part of the application process, Esteban Vazquez wrote two essays—one on leadership and another on overcoming challenges. She explained that her first essay focused on her participation in the Tutor Guild at ECA. "Through the guild, I have been able to tutor students in various subjects," she noted. The experience taught her about different learning styles and how to engage students effectively.
Her second essay addressed challenges faced as a child due to language barriers. She recounted how observing non-English speaking patients struggle with communication inspired her to earn a certification as an interpreter. This step aligns with her aspiration to become an OB/GYN who can communicate effectively with non-English speaking patients.
When asked what set her apart in terms of personal characteristics, leadership skills, and service activities, Esteban Vazquez highlighted her involvement in the Interact Club. "I've been the president of the club for two years," she mentioned. Additionally, she founded the First Generation Club at ECA to support fellow first-generation college students.
Looking ahead, Esteban Vazquez has applied to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where she plans to major in Obstetrics. Her interest stems from a love for surgical work, patient care interactions, and helping bring new lives into the world.
Reflecting on how Early College Academy prepared her for future endeavors, she emphasized developing time management skills in a challenging environment and learning that seeking help is beneficial.
In ten years' time, Esteban Vazquez hopes to have completed schooling or be in residency as an OB/GYN while continuing to spend quality time with family members who have supported her throughout her journey.
