The Pender County Board of Education is still waiting on a response from a federal agency about accusations of racism at the high school.

The allegations stemmed from a school employee of the North Carolina school district posting documents on social media referring to the alleged use of racial terms by a school teacher on two different incidents the Port City Daily reported in June.

Earlier in August, the board chairman, Don Hall, said the district has not received a response yet from the federal Office for Civil Rights.

"Please be advised that I previously had the federal Office of Civil Rights contacted about helping with our investigation that you have all heard about," Hall said in a statement obtained by WECT 6 News on Aug. 1. " As of today, I have received no response from them, so for the record, I have written a letter to OCR expressing my dismay at their lack of response."

The district has also hired an independent firm to conduct an investigation, the Port City Daily reported. The board indicated a desire to be transparent in the process and ensure fair treatment.

"Our purpose is to continue to show transparency in this process, and to ensure that all parties are treated fairly," Hall said in a statement on Twitter in June. "We take these allegations seriously, and are committed to ensuring that they are thoroughly investigated and resolved."
