Angela Betterton has been named the Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) Certified Employee of the Month for January 2025. She serves as an Exceptional Children’s teacher at Thanksgiving Elementary and has dedicated 25 years to JCPS, also working as a curriculum coach and after-school coordinator.

Betterton's colleagues commend her for providing exemplary leadership and guidance, ensuring best practices in teaching and classroom management. As part of her recognition, she shared insights into her career and approach to education.

When asked why she chose special education, Betterton stated, "I chose the role of a special education teacher to make a difference in the lives of children that cannot always advocate for themselves." She believes every child can learn with the right tools and modifications.

Reflecting on her profession, Betterton said, "I have learned that the value of a student’s education cannot be measured." She emphasized the importance of each moment spent with students as precious learning opportunities.

To create a successful learning environment, Betterton focuses on reflecting on her teaching strategies to meet her students' needs. "I want my students to feel valued when they enter the classroom," she explained.

Betterton plans to continue building on relationships, reflection, and resilience. She noted that trust is essential in building relationships with students: "Children must first trust you and know that you believe in them before you can begin influencing their academic minds."

Looking ahead, Betterton expressed excitement about continuing her educational journey while anticipating retirement. Her advice to future educators is clear: "Be passionate about what you do, don’t waste a single moment, and 'Be a Light'!"
