Johnston County Public Schools education officials are trying to determine the best way to start the school year, which is slated to begin in August, district leaders said in June

The review is part of a state requirement for school districts to create three plans for academic instruction that account for COVID-19 and the requirements associated with the illness are based on reports from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Public Instruction, education leaders said in June statement

In the news release, Johnston County education leaders said the three options under consideration are to continue remote instruction, have students return to their respective buildings but following minimal social distancing and enforcing sanitization regulations or brick-and-mortar learning, however, with no more than 50% capacity and following social distancing and sanitization standards.

Education officials said in the statement that plans are flexible and may change given based on COVID-19. Johnston County schools are scheduled to reopen Aug. 17, however, the Early College and Career and Technical Leadership Academy resume on Aug. 3.
