Mrs. Galdina Piedra, the treasurer at McGee's Crossroads Elementary, has been recognized as the JCPS Classified Employee of the Month for October 2024. Her career with Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) began in Child Nutrition Services before she transitioned to the front office, where she worked for four years. Five years ago, she took on her current role as school treasurer.
Her colleagues commend her work ethic and dedication to adhering to policies and procedures. They describe her as a team player who consistently maintains a positive demeanor while managing a large staff.
In an interview, Mrs. Piedra shared her thoughts on receiving this recognition: "As an employee it makes me feel appreciated, and as a person it’s an honor to be Employee of The Month."
Discussing her responsibilities, she highlighted the importance of securing substitute teachers when regular teachers are absent: "One of my primary duties is to secure substitute teachers when classroom teachers are absent. This is an important part of my job because it is imperative that our students have educators in their rooms each day."
Mrs. Piedra emphasized the significance of building relationships with students: "It’s important for all staff to build healthy relationships with students because students learn best when they have great relationships with staff." She noted that being one of the first faces many students and parents see helps her foster these connections.
On teamwork within the school environment, she stated: "I think collaboration and good teamwork is the foundation for a great school for our students."
Reflecting on what she enjoys most about her job, Mrs. Piedra said: "What I like about my job is that I learn something new every day, not only professionally but as a person."
To those considering joining JCPS, she advised: "Education is all about loving the children you are educating. You have to love kids."
