Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) organized the 20th Annual Veterans Day Celebration at Smithfield-Selma High School on November 11, 2024. The event aimed to honor veterans from Johnston County who have served in the military.

The celebration was led by students and featured performances by the JCPS All-County Band, Chorus, and JROTC. The band and chorus performed patriotic songs, including those of each armed forces division, while the JROTC presented flags and demonstrated an armed exhibition drill.

Clayton High Navy JROTC cadet Logan Doody expressed his appreciation for the veterans, saying, “We’re here for the veterans. Seeing them being appreciated and being happy and talking to one another inspires me to persevere and get to that next level.”

Sarah Fawn McLamb, JCPS Fine Arts Curriculum Specialist and co-organizer of the event, praised the students' dedication: "I want to express sincere thanks to each of the Chorus, Band, and JROTC students and teachers that participated in this year's event. Due to unusual scheduling, additional time commitments were required this year, and they rose to the occasion."

JCPS emphasizes educating each generation about Veterans Day's significance through various student involvement opportunities across all grade levels. Chief Communications Officer Richard Carr highlighted kindergarteners' contributions: “One of the most heartfelt displays of appreciation is provided by our kindergarten students who provide hundreds of personal colored pages.”

The event also recognized Alexander Obrizok for his service in World War II as a Coast Guard member. He was acknowledged as the oldest living Johnston County veteran present.

US Army Veteran Harold Keen served as guest speaker. He shared insights from his military service in Vietnam and addressed future generations: “I believe service to our country is one of the most fulfilling things you can do.”

Keen encouraged attendees to remember fallen soldiers by inviting veterans to say aloud a comrade’s name they wished to honor.

Following the ceremony, veterans enjoyed a Thanksgiving-style meal prepared by JCPS School Nutrition Services. Mr. Carr noted that serving approximately 620 meals was "simply a small token of appreciation."

Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Gabriella Harris added, “There is no way that we can express our gratitude enough. But there is no good reason why we shouldn't try.”

JCPS plans to continue hosting this annual event in future years.
