Johnston County Public Schools has announced that South Smithfield Elementary is now an Authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Primary Years Programme. This authorization introduces inquiry-based learning to elementary students, integrating both conceptual and content-based education.

The program aims to empower students by building relationships, acquiring knowledge through inquiry, contributing positively to society, and embracing international-mindedness and diversity. Principal Chad McLamb stated, "It opens up the world to options and opportunities."

The school is part of a feeder pattern that includes Smithfield Middle and Smithfield-Selma High, which also have IB authorization. This offers students IB options from elementary through high school.
