Riverwood Elementary's Shannon Pawlak has been recognized as the 2024-2025 Assistant Principal of the Year for Johnston County Public Schools. With 27 years in education, Pawlak spent two decades teaching before transitioning to an administrative role. She has served as assistant principal at Riverwood Elementary for three years, contributing to significant academic achievements alongside Principal Leigh White.
Data from the North Carolina Department of Instruction indicates that Riverwood Elementary was among the top 10% in academic growth for the 2023-2024 school year. "I am so proud of the accomplishments that our teachers, staff, and students have achieved," Pawlak said. She attributes student success to improved data dissemination and a teacher artisanship training model.
Pawlak emphasizes that student success begins with teachers collaborating in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). For students needing additional support, Riverwood Elementary established a Database Problem Solving Team comprising educators from various disciplines who focus on comprehensive student development. "Over time you really see those students make connections and blossom," she noted.
The teacher artisanship model is another key factor in Riverwood's success. Pawlak and White were inspired by Mike Rutherford's book “The Artisan Teacher: A Field Guide to Skillful Teaching” after attending a related conference. The model encourages teachers to observe peers' classrooms, fostering professional growth and school-wide improvement. "It's been phenomenal to watch," Pawlak remarked about the program's impact.
Riverwood Elementary is now seeking designation as a model school due to its rapid growth and high expectations for all students. This status would allow it to serve as an example for teacher training across other schools.
Despite these achievements, Pawlak finds inspiration in small moments with students, such as observing kindergarteners learning letters or witnessing at-risk students have breakthrough moments in class. Her commitment extends beyond academics; her family shares strong ties with Riverwood schools, underscoring her dedication.
"My guiding light is service," she stated, emphasizing her goal of creating a supportive environment for teachers and ensuring families feel safe within the school community.
