During a recent meeting, the Board of Education honored four former educators with the 2024-2025 Living Legend Award. The award is given to former Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) educators who have left a lasting impact on their students and teaching methods.
The recipients of this year's awards are Mrs. Darla Peedin, Mrs. Darlene Williford, Mr. James E. Barbour, and Mrs. Pearl Blackmon. Each has contributed significantly to education in Johnston County over the years.
Pearl Blackmon spent 30 years as an educator before retiring from JCPS in 2007. Her educational background includes graduating from several universities and working at various schools, including Woodland Elementary in New Jersey and South Smithfield Primary in North Carolina. Blackmon has held leadership roles in multiple organizations such as the National Association of University Women and the Johnston County Association of Educators.
Darla Peedin also dedicated 30 years to education before retiring in 2012. She taught music across different grade levels within JCPS and is known for her involvement with the JCPS SHOWCASE OF STARS event. Peedin holds degrees from Atlantic Christian College and East Carolina University and continues to serve her community through various roles, including as Director of the Johnston County Education Foundation.
Darlene Williford's career spanned 30 years during which she taught math for grades 5 through 7 and adult education at Johnston Community College. Recognized for her contributions to education, she has been awarded titles such as Teacher of the Year by Johnston County Flame for Learning.
James E. Barbour began his career with JCPS after graduating from North Carolina A&T University. He served as a science teacher and principal at various schools within the county before taking on civic duties as a town commissioner and mayor pro-tem for Smithfield.
These individuals' names will be added to those already honored inside the Living Legends Room at the Evander S. Simpson Building in Smithfield.
